Book Review—Roomies by Christina Lauren

I’ve been reading a lot of deep/heavy material in 2020.  So, I decided to lighten things up and read Roomies by Christina Lauren.  Christina Lauren is actually the author duo of Christina Hobbs and Lauren Billings.  I previously read their books The Unhoneymooners and Twice in a Blue Moon and loved them!  I purchased Roomies with an Audible credit, and I really loved it, too!

Roomies was published in 2017 and is a romance novel.  It is the love story of characters Holland Bakker and Calvin McLoughlin.  The underlying theme actually has a lot to do with finding your own true self within a love story, which I really enjoyed.  Holland, who works for her Broadway producer uncle, notices Calvin, a talented street musician, in the subway station.  She finally gets up her nerve one day and speaks to him.  That also is the day she is attacked in the station and ends up in the hospital.  The police tell her that someone made a call, but then hung up.  She suspects it was Calvin who called, but she couldn’t figure out why he wouldn’t have given his name.  She suggests lunch with Calvin, and he tells her that he has let his visa run out after studying at Juilliard, and that is why he couldn’t talk to the police.  When Holland’s uncle loses his first chair violin, Calvin auditions on guitar for an important position with a famous singer who is going to begin his run with the play.  Calvin blows everyone away during his audition.  But, he doesn’t have a visa.  However, Holland comes up with a brilliant plan.

This is such a cute book, and there is a movie in the planning stages!  I think you will enjoy Roomies if you are in the mood for a contemporary, romantic read!
