Book Review—The Library Book by Susan Orlean

The Library Book by Susan Orlean, recommended to me by my sister, Glenna, is such a great book.  It is definitely one of the best books I have read so far this year.  It is non-fiction with a true crime element.  This book chronicles the history of the Los Angeles Public Library.  The history is fascinating, to say the least.  On April 29, 1986 there was a tragedy at the library.  Never heard of it, you say? That’s because the biggest news story that week was the Chernobyl disaster, which happened three days earlier.  Otherwise what happened at the Los Angeles Public Library would have been the top nationwide news story.

This book will make you want to visit your local public library as soon as the quarantine ends.  It shows how vital libraries are to their communities.  The book also talks about librarians and library administrators, and boy, were there some eccentric ones!  Susan Orlean is a master writer and researcher.  She visited libraries all over the world to write this book.  Her interviews were so interesting, and her love for her mother, who inspired her love of reading and books, shines throughout the book.

The Library Book was a Reese Witherspoon Book Club choice in 2018.  It won the LA Times Book Prize for Current Interest in 2018.  It was also the Goodreads Choice Award for Nonfiction in 2018.  It is also a Book of the Month choice, which is how I purchased the book.  I highly recommend The Library Book by Susan Orlean.
