Book Review—The Secrets We Kept by Lara Prescott

The Secrets We Kept by Lara Prescott is an amazing book.  It was written by the author as her thesis, and it is Ms. Prescott’s debut novel.  Published in September of 2019,  it was chosen as a Reese Witherspoon Book Club pick last year. That is how I heard about the book.  It received the Edgar Award for Best First Novel in 2020 and received the Goodreads Choice Award for Debut Novel in 2019.

The book is historical fiction based on the true story of the publication of the book, Dr. Zhivago by Boris Pasternak.  Russia would not publish Dr. Zhivago, and there was actually a CIA plot to get the book published.  The book is thrilling and a great spy fiction story.  The book also delves into the life of Boris Pasternak and his mistress, Olga Ivinskaya.  Many believe she was the inspiration for the character of Lara in Dr. Zhivago.

Did you notice the name of the author?  Her mother named her Lara after the character in the book.  For this reason, Ms. Prescott has always had an interest in the book, due to her mother’s influence.

The book was made into a movie in 1965 staring Omar Sharif as Yuri Zhivago and Julie Christie as Lara Antipova.  I know it was one of my mother’s favorite movies. You also might find this interview of Lara Prescott enchanting and informative as she tells the lengths she went to when she researched The Secrets We Kept. The interview was made for the Reese Witherspoon Book Club.

I highly recommend that you read The Secrets We Kept.
