Book Review—Beach Read by Emily Henry

Beach Read by Emily Henry is by far the best romance novel I have read in a long time.  It is not your typical beach read since Ms. Henry tackles difficult topics such as betrayal, dealing with grief, along with love.  The main characters, January Andrews and Augustus Everette (Gus), are both writers of opposite genres.  January is a romance novelist, and Gus is a serious literary writer.  They actually somewhat met in college, but again, were on different literary paths and did not connect.

One summer January stays at a beach house in the fictional town of North Bear Lakes Shores, Michigan.  Her editor is after her to finish a draft for her latest book, but she has major writer’s block.  She has a grumpy neighbor, and then realizes later that he is Augustus.  Gus has had a major literary hit, but he, too, is suffering from a bout of writer’s block.  They come up with an idea to switch genres.  Gus has to write a HEA (Happily Ever After) and January has to write a serious novel.  They take each other on “field trips” to help each other write in their new genre.

The book is told from January’s point of view, which I really enjoyed.  Both characters are so endearing as they try to figure out their lives, their writing, and what they mean to each other.  I highly recommend that you pick up a copy of Beach Read this summer.

Note:  The author based fictitious North Bear Lake Shores, Michigan on Holland and Saugatuck, Michigan, in case you are from those areas.
