Book Review—The Vanishing Half by Brit Bennett

The Vanishing Half  by Brit Bennett is a great summer read.  It was chosen as a Book of the Month selection, a Barnes and Noble pick, and the GMA Book Club pick for June.  Currently The Vanishing Half is #2 on the New York Times Best Sellers list for hardcover fiction and #1 on the combined print and e-book fiction.

The Vanishing Half  is the story of two black twin sisters, Desiree and Stella Vignes.  They were inseparable growing up in their tiny town of Mallard, Louisiana.  The town was founded by their great-great-great grandfather as a place for light-skinned blacks to live.  Prodded by Desiree, the twins leave Mallard and begin a new life in New Orleans.  They eventually go their separate ways when one of the twins decides to pass as a white woman.

This is a true coming-of-age story.  Brit Bennett has written an extraordinary novel, where all the parts and pieces fit beautifully together.  It is a story of sisterhood and transformation.  Just for fun, keep track of the “vanishing” element in the story.  I highly recommend The Vanishing Half.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

In addition, Brit Bennett wrote the highly successful novel, The Mothers.
