Book Review—The Boys’ Club by Erica Katz

The Boys’ Club by Erica Katz is the 2020 version of John Grisham’s 1991 legal thriller, The Firm. Erica Katz, a pseudonym, is a Manhattan lawyer, who wrote the fictional novel over 18 months during her annual leave. The Boys’ Club is her debut novel and has already been picked up by Netflix.

The book is enthralling! Main character Alex Vogel just graduated from Harvard Law and has been hired by the prestigious Manhattan law firm, Klasko & Fitch. Alex lives with her longtime boyfriend, Sam. Alex starts out in the firm’s real estate group, but quickly begins doing more business with the Mergers & Acquisitions group, the most prestigious in the office. Alex finds life with M&A consuming her, but she loves the dinners, the perks, the 24/7 workdays, and all-nighters. As a first-year, there is competition between her colleagues, and she learns to navigate “the boys’ club.”

The Boys’ Club is definitely one of the best books I have read this year. Ms. Katz brings Alex Vogel to life with all of the thrilling twists and turns that happen in her first year. She also inserts a sub-plot throughout the story that foreshadows events to come. I listened to the book on the Libby app from Orange County Library Services. Julia Whelan is the narrator, and she is one of the best in the business!

I highly recommend The Boys’ Club by Erica Katz.
