Book Review—The Chelsea Girls by Fiona Davis

The Chelsea Girls is the fourth Fiona Davis book I have read. Published in July of 2019, The Chelsea Hotel in New York City is the iconic building that is used as the backdrop for this novel. The Chelsea Hotel is a known residence for artists, writers, musicians, actors, filmmakers, and poets, especially in the 1950’s. The book focuses on the theater district of 1950’s New York City. Main characters Hazel Riley and Maxine Mead meet while touring with the USO during WWII. When they return to New York City, they stay at The Chelsea Hotel. Ms. Davis describes The Chelsea and all of its 1950’s glamour beautifully for the reader. When Hazel writes a play that gets the attention of a Broadway producer, she is ecstatic! And, Maxine is set to play the star in her show! However, this is the age of McCarthyism, and it has now hit the New York theatre scene. There are a lot of twists and turns in the book as the two women try to navigate through these dark times. As with all of Ms. Davis’s books, The Chelsea Girls is meticulously researched.

I highly recommend The Chelsea Girls! I’m so excited to read Fiona Davis’s newest book, The Lions of Fifth Avenue! The iconic building that is featured in that book is the New York Public Library!
