Book Review—Defending Jacob by William Landay

Defending Jacob by William Landay is a work of fiction, more specifically a suspenseful legal story. Andy Barber, an assistant district attorney, his wife, Laurie, and son, Jacob are living an idyllic life in Newton, Massachusetts. Shockingly, one of Jacob’s classmates is murdered on the way to school. Even more shocking is that Jacob is a suspect in the murder. This book delves into the crumbling lives of Andy and Laurie as they defend their son. This book has twists that I didn’t see coming at all. I listened to the audio version of the book and finished it in three days.

In addition, Apple TV+ did a mini series based on Defending Jacob. Chris Evans does an outstanding job as Andy Barber, as does Michelle Dockery as Laurie Barber, and Jaeden Martell as Jacob.

I would definitely read the book before you watch the miniseries. William Landay develops the characters so well and has created a perplexing “whodunit” novel. I highly recommend Defending Jacob by William Landay.
