Book Review—Silver Sparrow by Tayari Jones

Silver Sparrow by Tayari Jones is the NEA (National Endowment for the Arts) Big Read selection this year. The official paperback for the NEA is widely available right now. It contains a conversation with the author that is insightful to read after you have read the book. Published in 2011, Silver Sparrow is the story of James Witherspoon, a bigamist. Set in Atlanta, the voices of the novel are his two daughters by different mothers. This book is riveting. I couldn’t put it down. There are themes of abandonment, secrets, and love.

Silver Sparrow is the perfect book for a book club. It leads to lively discussion. In fact, I participated in a book club through Life@UCF (University of Central Florida) on Zoom for Silver Sparrow. Tayari Jones is a masterful writer and has written a novel that has a messy, complicated plot. If you are like me, you will fall in love with Dana and Chaurisse as they tell their stories.

Tayari Jones has written three other novels. I read American Marriage in 2018. It is a compelling novel about a young married couple whose marriage is rocked when the husband is arrested. Her other two novels are Leaving Atlanta and The Untelling. I want to read both of them now.

I highly recommend Silver Sparrow by Tayari Jones.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

P.S. If you look closely at the photo, you can see Milo laying in the grass watching me take the picture! So cute!
