Book Review: This is Big: How the Founder of Weight Watchers Changed the World (and me) by Marisa Meltzer

This is Big by Marisa Meltzer is the story of the founder of Weight Watchers, Jean Nidetch, along with the author’s journey with self-improvement. The chapters alternate between Jean’s life and Marisa’s experience with weight loss and body image. Weight Watchers allowed Marisa to delve into their archives to research Jean Nidetch. Weight Watchers did not have approval over the book; the book was Marisa’s own vision.

The story of Jean Nidetch is quite fascinating. Hers was definitely a rags to riches story. Jean became one of the most successful woman entrepreneurs in the United States. Ms. Meltzer writes of the ups and down of Jean’s fascinating life.

Marissa speaks of her own weight-loss journey beginning as a young girl. She has tried all kinds of diets, and I found Marisa’s writing to be relatable and many of her stories are just hilarious! Marisa does attend WW (formerly known as Weight Watchers) in Brooklyn. She writes about finding a meeting that fits you, as far as diversity of members and coaches.

As a WW member, I do find Marisa’s description of the rebranding of Weight Watchers to be fair. WW’s app, in my opinion, is one of its best assets, along with having meetings on Zoom during the pandemic (thank you, thank you!). The company has strived to become more body positive and integrates the mind/body connection.

I really enjoyed This is Big by Marisa Meltzer. The autobiography/biography is engaging for anyone who realizes that transformation of oneself goes beyond the number on a scale.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5
