Book Review— Transcendent Kingdom by Yaa Gyasi

Transcendent Kingdom by Yaa Gyasi is one of the best books I have read this year. It is a masterfully written novel about a family from Ghana that relocates to Alabama. The main character, Gifty, now a fifth-year candidate in neuroscience at Stanford School of Medicine, tells the story of her family, comprised of her mother, father, and brother, Nana. The novel combines faith and science along with depression, addiction, and grief to weave a story that has many layers due to loss. It is deeply moving with fully-developed characters. Transcendent Kingdom received the Women’s Prize for Fiction Longlist in 2021 and was the Goodreads Choice Award for Fiction in 2020. I highly recommend Transcendent Kingdom by Yaa Gyasi.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

Yaa Gyasi has published one other book, her debut novel, Homegoing.
