Book Review—Better Luck Next Time by Julia Claiborne Johnson

In the 1930’s women could get a quick divorce in Reno, Nevada. The only catch was that the women had to establish residency there for six weeks. This is the background for the delightful novel, Better Luck Next Time by Julia Claiborne Johnson, which was Barnes & Noble’s January Book Club selection.

The novel is narrated by Ward, as he is reflecting back on his life, specifically the time he spent working at the Flying Leap dude ranch during the Great Depression. The ranch’s clientele were broken-hearted women who were living at the ranch to fulfill their six week residency requirement.

Ward is such a gentleman amid the chaos around him. Enter Nina O’Malley who is a repeat customer at the Flying Leap. Nina is every man’s dream, beautiful, full of life, and shenanigans. Enter Emily Sommer, who drove to the Flying Leap by herself from San Francisco  in her Pierce-Arrow. The three of them were pals all summer shopping, hiking, and horseback riding. But more importantly, all three grew up that summer as their friendships deepened. In addition, Better Luck Next Time has some hilarious, laugh out loud scenes. Ward manages to get himself into quite a few predicaments with the ladies.

If you are looking for the perfect lighthearted novel to read, I highly recommend that you pick up a copy of Better Luck Next Time.
