Book Review—When No One is Watching by Alyssa Cole

When No One is Watching by Alyssa Cole was published in September, 2020. I listened to the audiobook version. It uses two narrators, Susan Dalian and Jay Aaseng to effectively play the main characters of Sydney Green and Theo. I read this book through the UCF Alumni Book Club.

This book is listed as a thriller, mystery and a suspense story. To me, the book was more mystery and suspense.  The thriller part of the book is the ending. The book is very fast-paced at the end, and you won’t want to stop reading or listening once it gets to that point.

The basic premise of the story is that Sydney Green has grown up in Brooklyn and her neighborhood is undergoing gentrification. Her neighbor, Theo, recently moved into the neighborhood with his wife and they are remodeling their home. Theo volunteers to help Sydney with a neighborhood tour she is developing.

I enjoyed the perspectives switching from Sydney’s to Theo’s in the book. I also appreciated not only the main characters, but the side characters who were Sydney’s neighbors. The book does delve a lot into the history of Brooklyn and the gentrification taking place in neighborhoods. Many real world issues and social injustices are incorporated into the thriller aspect of the book.
