Book Review—The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue by V.E. Schwab

“Adeline has decided she would rather be a tree, like Estelle. If she must grow roots, she would rather be left to flourish wild instead of pruned, would rather stand alone, allowed to grow beneath the open sky.”

The above quote is from The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue by V.E. Schwab. It is a fantasy about a girl in 1714, while in deep duress, makes a deal with darkness. The deal is really a curse, and Addie spends the next 300 years traveling the world while maneuvering her cursed life. Addie is a strong female character who is stubborn and defiant, as well as resilient in the facing the consequences of her rash decision. This is an amazing fantasy that is also listed as historical fantasy, since Addie takes you, as the reader, through many historical events.

I highly recommend The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue if you:
  • Enjoy fantasy
  • Enjoy a beautifully written book
  • Don’t mind that it is long (448 pages of bliss; 17 hours of Julia Whelan’s spectacular narration)
  • Enjoy a strong female character who gets herself tangled with darkness
  • Love a unique book
