Book Review—Breathless by Jennifer Niven

“There’s this feeling you get when you write a really good, true sentence or paragraph or scene, and it makes you feel invincible, as if you can do anything. It feels like a superpower, and in that moment no one can touch you. You’re the best there is. That’s how you make me feel, Jeremiah Crew. Like I’m the best there is.”

This is the essence of Breathless by Jennifer Niven. The New York Times bestselling author of All the Bright Places has written a beautiful young adult novel in Breathless.  This novel was recommended by Ashley Spivey, founder of Spivey’s Book Club

Claudine Henry (Claude) is graduating from high school, excited about the road trip she is going to take with her best friend in the summer, and is going to Columbia in the fall, as she aspires to become a writer. A few days before graduation, Claude’s life changes overnight. Instead, after graduation, she accompanies her mother to an island off of the Georgia coast. While her mother is researching and writing a book, Claude reads, explores the island, and writes.  It is then that she meets Jeremiah Crew or “Miah” and together both of their lives change forever.

I’m not going to lie, this book made me tear up several times. By the end, you may need a box of tissues nearby. The writing is beautiful and the story is captivating. It is a powerful first love story that will stay with you and is very close to the author’s heart. I highly recommend Breathless by Jennifer Niven.
