Book Review—The Lost Apothecary by Sarah Penner

“Believe me, if you want something different, the only person holding you back is you.”

I loved that quote from The Lost Apothecary by Sarah Penner. It is Ms. Penner’s debut novel and it is an amazing story. The cover of the book is stunning, too!

The Lost Apothecary is set in London. It is a story that has two timelines, the first in 1791 and the second in present day. In 1791, the apothecary is run by Nella with eventual help from Eliza. It seems like a regular apothecary on the outside, but the inside of the building has hidden rooms as well as a hidden agenda. Leap to present day and Caroline, visiting London, goes mudlarking in the River Thames and discovers an artifact. Caroline uncovers some etching on the piece and thus begins her research and quest to find its origin.

The Lost Apothecary is brilliantly written by Ms. Penner as the story weaves its way through the use of the two timelines. All of the heroines are strong women who I found likable. The novel is well-researched and quite unique. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and couldn’t put it down.

I received this book through Once Upon Time Book Club. It came with a hardback copy of the book, four gifts to open as you read, along with a quote card, the author’s signature on a bookplate, and a book club kit.

I hope you enjoy The Lost Apothecary as much as I did!
