Book Review—Hamnet by Maggie O’Farrell

In Hamnet, author Maggie O’Farrell takes the little-known history of William Shakespeare’s life with his wife, Anne/Agnes and three children, Susanna and twins, Hamnet and Judith, and fills in the gaps with a beautiful, yet heartbreaking story. If you have previously read anything by Maggie O’Farrell, you know that her books are full of descriptive writing. Hamnet is no exception. The reader is brought to Warwickshire in the 1580’s with all of its beauty and also the dreaded plague.

The book focuses on Anne/Agnes Shakespeare, her  marriage, her eccentricities and her role as a mother. This book becomes extremely heartbreaking, especially because of O’Farrell’s descriptions of a mother’s grief. It was difficult for me to read after losing my nephew nearly six years ago, but I’m glad I kept reading.

Even though it can be extremely sad, I still recommend reading Hamnet
