Book Review—Olympus, Texas by Stacey Swann

Olympus, Texas is Stacey Swann’s debut novel. It is a true Texan family saga with larger than life characters tied to Greek mythology. Olympus, Texas was GMA’s Book Club pick for the month of May. It has also been picked up to become a motion picture.

The novel encompasses six days in the life of Peter and June Briscoe (Zeus/Hera) and begins with their son, March (Mars) returning home after his self-imposed exile from Olympus. The Briscoes and their children are hiding secrets, resentments and anger towards one another. The characters come alive in this story thanks to Stacey Swann’s magnificent writing. As a reader, you become to know each character’s inner-workings and why there is so much family tension. There is an event in the story that brings everyone to their knees, and the characters have to work their way back to reconcile what happened.

If you enjoy well-written books with great family drama, then Olympus, Texas should be on your list of books to read.
