Book Review—Last Summer at the Golden Hotel by Elyssa Friedland

The Last Summer at the Golden Hotel by Elyssa Friedland definitely gave me Dirty Dancing vibes. I pictured the hotel where Johnny and Baby danced their way through the summer as I was reading this novel. The Golden Hotel becomes a character of sorts in the book. The hotel has a deep history of famous singers and comedians performing during summers long ago, as well as a family history. Actually two families own The Golden Hotel, the Goldmans and the Weingolds. The author cleverly added family trees of both families before the prologue, which was quite helpful when reading the book.

This is the story of two families trying to keep their hotel business afloat, despite waning reservations through the years. The Golden Hotel is now competing with more modern resorts, and must make major renovations in order to attract clientele. Then there is an offer to buy the hotel, which begins to plummet the relationship between the two families, which has been growing more and more strained for years. Add in a little romance and scandal here and there and the children and grandchildren of the owners, and you have a delightful nostalgic summer read!
