Book Review—The Damage by Caitlin Wahrer

The Damage is Caitlin Wahrer’s debut novel. This book is a thrilling mystery from the beginning. The first scene is a flash forward to 2019 in which two of the characters, Detective Rice and Julia, meet to talk. That sets the reader up for the mystery that is about to be read.

(Trigger Warning: Male sexual assault) The story continues in 2015 with Nick, Julia’s brother-in-law, being stood up by his current boyfriend at a bar. Nick eventually meets an older attractive man, Ray, that night. Nick accompanies Ray back to his hotel room where he is sexually assaulted.

Nick’s brother, Tony, and Julia become his support system through all of the trauma and the investigation conducted by Detective Rice. The case becomes more and more complicated. The novel is structured with multiple points of view from the various characters, and also a multiple timeline, which adds to the mystery.

The novel is enthralling because of how Ms. Wahrer  flawlessly executes the story. The reader knows something is going to happen, which adds to the suspense. I did not see the ending coming at all!

The Damage is an amazing debut novel! Highly recommend!
