Book Review—Where the Grass is Green and the Girls are Pretty by Lauren Weisberger

Lauren Weisberger’s newest novel is Where the Grass is Green and the Girls are Pretty. The author of The Devil Wears Prada has written a humorous domestic fiction novel concerning Peyton Marcus, a news anchor, and her sister Skye, a stay-at-home mom. The title comes from the Guns N’ Roses song Paradise City. Coincidentally, Paradise is the name of the New York suburb in which Peyton Marcus lives with her family.

In the novel, both of the sisters are in crisis. Peyton’s crisis has to do with her daughter’s admission to Princeton and Skye’s has to do with starting a nonprofit. The sisters are keeping secrets from each other, when normally they tell each other everything.

Max, Peyton’s daughter, is my favorite character. Being the daughter of a nationally known morning news anchor is tough, especially when your mom is gorgeous and so personable. The author does an excellent job of showing how Max responds to the crisis.

Of course, the book is full of a life of privilege, from Botox, to gym workouts, and finally to helicopter parenting at private schools. Where the Grass is Green and the Girls are Pretty is entertaining and humorous. Take it with you on your next vacation, and be sure to listen to Guns N’ Roses!
