Book Review—The Reading List by Sara Nisha Adams

The Reading List is a debut novel by Sara Nisha Adams. It is about a friendship that develops between Mukesh, a widower and 17-year-old Aleisha. Aleisha works at the local library, but is not a reader. She spends all of her extra time caring for her mother. Mukesh meets Aleisha when he returns a book to the library. His late wife had checked out The Time Traveler’s Wife, which was the last book she read. Mukesh also read the book and asked Aleisha for a book recommendation. Aleisha, not being a reader, was not helpful and later felt badly about her conversation with Mukesh. Later, Aleisha finds a reading list inside a book. She decides to read the books and then recommends them to Mukesh. Then Aleisha and Mukesh begin to discuss the books together.

I love the friendship that Mukesh and Aleisha form around their new love for books. They are both lonely in their own way, and the books and the cross-generational bond they form benefits both of them. The books on the list are:

  • To Kill a Mockingbird
  • Rebecca
  • Life of Pi
  • The Kite Runner
  • Pride and Prejudice
  • Little Women
  • A Suitable Boy
  • Beloved

It is not necessary to have read all of the books before you read The Reading List. I had either read or seen a movie version of half of them, and it didn’t affect my enjoyment of the book.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who loves reading and books. It is definitely a book for booklovers. The author shows how books help with grief, loneliness, and the challenges life brings to all of us. It also shows how important libraries and librarians are to our communities.
