Book Review—We Are the Brennans by Tracey Lange

I enjoy reading debut novels. We Are the Brennans by Tracey Lange is a strong debut novel about a large Irish-Catholic family whose members are keeping many secrets from each other. The novel’s beginning hooks the reader by introducing Sandy Brennan. She left her family and boyfriend hurriedly to California without explanation 5 years earlier. After a night out with friends, Sandy wakes up in an LA hospital after a drunk driving accident. Her brother, Denny, back in Westchester, New York is her emergency contact. Even though Denny is dealing with his own issues, he drops everything to go to California. Denny convinces a reluctant Sandy to return home.

Upon Sandy’s return the reader is introduced to other family members and friends. Each chapter is organized from the point of view of a different character, and the story seamlessly flows from chapter to chapter. This is a story of family, broken apart, but realizing the need for each other. I really hope that author Tracey Lange continues the story of the Brennans. I was not ready to let them go!
