Book Review—The Anthropocene Reviewed

I loved The Anthropocene Reviewed. The book’s description defines the Anthropocene as “The current geological age, in which human activity has profoundly shaped the planet and its biodiversity.” John Green has written essays on numerous topics about our human condition from Diet Dr Pepper, The Hall of Presidents (John Green grew up in Orlando where I live), Indianapolis (where John Green currently lives), Super Mario Kart, Canada Geese, The Notes App, to the photograph, Three Farmers on Their Way to a Dance. Green took many of the essays from his successful podcast of the same name. Even though all of the essays are on different topics, the theme of the Anthropocene is woven through each one. I listened to the audiobook which is narrated by the author. His voice is powerful when he discusses personal issues and the pandemic. I learned so much from this book. It made me want to learn more about a variety of subjects. Isn’t that what good writers do—encourage us to find out more about the subjects they have researched and beautifully described? I think so. As a reader I found myself relating events in my life to many of Green’s observations from The Notes App (mine crashed earlier this year and I lost nearly everything) to Hall of Presidents (always go to that attraction at Walt Disney World to cool off in the summer) to Indianapolis (I took many family vacations there.) I especially loved when he wrote of his mother from time to time. I had the pleasure of serving in a women’s organization in Orlando in which she was also a member and past-president.

John Green also reviews all of his essays on a 5-star scale. As a reader, you will get to know the author’s reviewing background. I give The Anthropocene Reviewed five stars.
