Book Review—A Rule Against Murder by Louise Penny

A Rule Against Murder is the 4th book in the Chief Inspector Armand Gamache series by Louise Penny. This is a delightful murder mystery series with quirky characters, beautiful settings, glorious food, and of course, a murder to be solved. I love listening to the series on audiobooks which I get from my local library for free through the Libby app. One tip is to be sure you read the series in order.

This book begins with Armand Gamache and his wife, Reine-Marie, taking a well-deserved vacation to celebrate their anniversary. They are staying at Manoir Bellechasse, just outside of Three Pines. The Morrow family is also there to celebrate a family reunion. There is quite a bit of bickering between relatives in the Morrow family. One morning, everyone wakes to find one of the members of the Morrow family dead. The following conversation ensues that morning between Armand Gamache and the proprietor, Madam Dubois:

“What happened here last night isn’t allowed,” said Madam Dubois.
“You have a rule against murder?” Armand Gamache asked.
“I do. When my husband and I bought the Bellechasse we made a pact…Everything that stepped foot on this land would be safe.”

Hence the title, A Rule Against Murder

You will love this series if you enjoy mysteries. The characters are endearing, and Armand Gamache has quite a backstory. Also, I particularly loved this book because of Chef Veronique’s delicious desserts she served at the Bellechasse. Would anyone like to join me to have “fresh mint ice cream on an eclair filled with creamy dark chocolate?”
