Book Review—Vladimir by Julia May Jonas

If there was ever a time to say, ‘Do not judge a book by its cover,’ it is with Vladimir by Julia May Jonas. This is Ms. Jonas’ debut novel, and it is like no other book I’ve ever read.

This work of literary fiction concerns the life of two married professors at a liberal arts college. John, the husband, is the chair of the English department. He is under investigation at the college because of accusations from former female students. His wife is the unnamed narrator of the novel, which is a genius structure used by the author. As the narrator, she is often unlikeable, which is part of the story.

This book is very different from how it might be perceived by the cover. Vladimir is a character in the story, but not the major character. There are many topics covered in the novel, such as marriage and relationships, power, motherhood, and aging. It is not a romance novel; it has a literary style. If you read this novel, stick with it until the end. You will know what I mean when you finish the book. There are many layers to unpack in this novel.

I will look forward to more books by Julia May Jonas. Vladimir was one of my February Book of the Month choices.
