Book Review—Flying Solo by Linda Holmes

Flying Solo by Linda Holmes was published on June 14, 2022 by Ballantine Books. I listened to the audiobook published by Random House Audio and narrated by none other than Julia Whelan, one of the best narrators in the business.

The book begins with main character Laurie Sassalyn traveling back to her hometown in Calcasset, Maine. Laurie is single, about to turn forty and has the insurmountable task of going through her 93-year-old Great-Aunt Dot’s belongings after she recently passed away. It is then that Laurie stumbles upon a wooden duck and some letters and photos from a mystery man. This discovery starts Laurie on a journey which includes her friends and old high school boyfriend, Nick Cooper.

I really enjoyed this book. I could definitely relate to Laurie, as a few years ago my sister and I went through the belongings of my 96-year-old mother. There are so many emotions, which author Linda Holmes beautifully captured in this novel. I loved the way the author easily moved from past to present so that the reader was able to know the importance of Great-Aunt Dot and Nick in Laurie’s life. This novel is about family love and ties with a touch of a love story (the maybe, maybe not kind) and Laurie coming to terms with what she wants in life moving forward.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

Other books in Linda Holmes include the Jenna Book Club pick, Evie Drake Starts Over.
