Book Review—The Winners by Fredrik Backman

I was so excited to read The Winners, the third book in the Beartown trilogy, by Fredrik Backman. I’ve enjoyed this series so much! This trilogy definitely needs to be read in order: Beartown, then Us Against You, and finally, The Winners. All of the books are set in the fictitious town of Beartown, located in Sweden. In Beartown, hockey is king. The books surround the players, coaches, and families in Beartown and focuses on teamwork and responsibility. The community is like all communities—there are rivalries and social injustice combined with love. It truly is an epic story told in three volumes. The Winners was definitely a satisfying end to the trilogy. Fredrik Backman is such a gifted writer, and the Beartown trilogy is one of his finest works.
The most asked question I get about these books is, ‘Do I have to love hockey to enjoy the Beartown series?’ The answer is no, however the reader will have a deep appreciation for the players, coaches, and families after reading the books because of the deep commitment they have to the game. Don’t be surprised if you want to attend a local hockey game after reading the books!

The new year would be the perfect time to start this trilogy, so I hope that you will consider it in planning your 2023 reading.
