Book Review—Age of Vice by Deepti Kapoor

I finished listening to Age of Vice by Deepti Kapoor a few days ago. The audiobook is 17 hours and 28 minutes long. The great thing about the audiobook, even with its length, is that it kept me engaged most of the time, and the narrator, Vadish Athavale is brilliant.

The novel focuses on the Wadia crime family through three main characters: Ajay, Sonny and Neda. Ajay, born into poverty in India, becomes a servant for Sonny, the playboy son of the crime boss. Ajay’s story takes up most of the beginning of the book and is my favorite storyline. Sonny’s character delves into the difficult relationship he has with his father. Neda, a journalist, gets caught up with Sonny and his world.

As a reader, you need to remember this is a crime novel/family saga (think Sopranos). There is violence, rape and drug use depicted in the novel. The ending definitely sets the scene for a sequel; in fact I have read that Age of Vice is the first book in a trilogy. In addition, it has been tapped by FX for a series.

If you enjoy family mafia-type crime stories, then Age of Vice is definitely a book you will want to read.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5
