Book Review—The House is on Fire by Rachel Beanland

I loved Rachel Beanland’s debut novel, Florence Adler Swims Forever, published in 2020. I was so excited to find out that she had a new novel coming out this year. The House is on Fire was published in April of this year. It is a historical fiction novel concerning the December 26, 1811 fire at the Richmond Theater in Richmond, Virginia.

In the novel, Ms. Beanland focuses on four major characters who each tell the story of the fire from their perspective. What is even more intriguing is that each of the four characters were based on actual people. One is the daughter of a famous patriot, two are slaves, and one is a stagehand. There were 600 people in the theater that night and 72 perished. The fire was the worst of its kind at that point and time in United States history.

This is a well-written and researched book. I really enjoyed it, and I hope you do, too.
