Book Review—The Lonely Hearts Book Club by Lucy Gilmore

The Lonely Hearts Book Club by Lucy Gilmore uses the love of books to bring together a quirky, but lovable group of people. Sloane Parker loves her job as a librarian at the Couer d’Alene Public Library. At 27-years-old, Sloane is a self-described introvert and is engaged to her chiropractor fiancé, Brett. The only tiny problem she has is a curmudgeonly senior library patron, Arthur McLachlan. Arthur is well-read, but is unkind to Sloane and the other librarians. When Arthur doesn’t visit the library for a few days, Sloane takes it upon herself to find out where he lives and checks on him. Sloane has some decisions to make once she finds Arthur.

Ultimately, this book brings together an unlikely group of people working together for a common good. They form a book club and study Remains of the Day, The Joy Luck Club and Anne of Green Gables. The author could have made this a sad novel, but there is humor, as well as camaraderie around books.
