The Bookshelf in Tryon, North Carolina

Recently I traveled to Tryon, North Carolina on a Girls’ Trip. (We have been vacationing together for 33 years!) I loved Tryon! While shopping on Trade Street, I found The Book Shelf, a quaint bookstore that was established in 1952. The Book Shelf features bestsellers and also has a children’s section. There are also charming gifts and cards. The Book Shelf also features Morris the horse, who is the town’s mascot. The Tryon Toymakers and Woodcarvers make a replica of Morris (pictured above) that is available for purchase. There are also Morris mailboxes and other souvenir items baring his likeness.

Tryon has an interesting history of being a writer’s retreat. The Pine Crest Inn was established in 1917. Swayback Cabin, first used as a hunting cabin and built around 1760, became a writer’s retreat for writers such as Earnest Hemingway and F. Scott Fitzgerald. The cabin is now on the National Registry of Historic Places.

In addition, my friends and I had lunch at Marengo Tapas and Bar Restaurant. They are known for “creating a take on French and Spanish cuisines.” I had an eggplant and goat cheese omelette, which was delicious. Everything is fresh and made to order. I highly recommend them.

Tryon is located one hour north of Greenville, South Carolina just past border of North Carolina. Its population is 1,562 and it is on an escarpment of the Blue Ridge Mountains.
