Intermezzo by Sally Rooney is introspective look at two brothers grieving their father’s death. Peter, the older brother, is a successful lawyer. Ivan, the younger brother is a competitive chess player. Both are grieving in their own way, which includes periods of estrangement and navigating complicated love lives. This novel differs from Rooney’s previous novels in that the romantic relationships take a backseat to the relationship between the brothers.
