This year is a special Veterans Day. It is the Centennial Commemoration of the end of World War I on November 11, 1918. My grandfather, William McCarthy, served in World War I. Just before he was relieved of duty, he was part of an iconic World War I photo. Arthur S. Mole took pictures of thousands of soldiers across the country and arranged them into “Living Photographs”. My grandfather is in the Human U.S. Shield made up of 30,000 men at Camp Custer in Battle Creek, Michigan. My grandfather is in the 5th star on the 2nd row.
