Book Review—Dear Edward by Ann Napolitano

Dear Edward by Ann Napolitano was one of January 2020’s most anticipated books.  I bought my copy through Book of the Month.  It was also Barnes and Noble’s and Read with Jenna’s (Jenna Bush Hager of the Today Show) January pick.  I postponed writing my review until after the January meeting of the Barnes and Noble Book Club, which was last night.  We enjoyed a lively discussion about Dear Edward.

Dear Edward is about a 12-year-old boy who is the sole survivor of a devastating airline crash that killed 186 people, including Edward’s parents and his older brother, Jordan.  The book is inspired by the true story of a child who lived through this experience.

The book is so well-written.  The book goes back and forth in time between the events on the airplane and Edward’s life after the crash.  Ms. Napolitano creates unforgettable characters, some of which we first meet on the plane, and others we meet as Edward heals from this traumatic experience.  The book becomes uplifting as we see Edward make slow, but steady progress back into the world.  The meaning of the title, Dear Edward, becomes apparent at one point in the book, and it is a turning point for Edward.

I highly recommend Dear Edward.  This book helps to answer the questions of finding purpose and moving forward after hardship.  So many of the relationships in this book become so heartwarming, and because of that, Dear Edward will be a book that will linger with me for a long time.
