The Only Plane in the Sky—An Oral History of 9/11 by Garrett M. Graf

The Only Plane in the Sky is the story of 9/11 told by those who know it best, the people who lived through it that day. Historian Garrett M. Graf has extensively gathered a wealth of information and oral histories of peoples’ stories to weave the chronological story of 9/11.  From the International Space Station to Air Force One (the only plane in the sky), to first responders, and survivors, this book is a comprehensive history of that fateful day.  I suggest listening to this book in audiobook form.  Graf assembled a cast of 45 voices to tell the stories.  Holter Graham is the narrator and Graf, himself, is interviewed.  The audio version also includes audio archives from US Presidential addresses, in-flight communications and air traffic control.  Even though it is long (15 hours and 55 minutes), the book is captivating and thorough.  Graf has included many never before heard stories of 9/11.  This is definitely a 5 star book.  I feel it is an important book for everyone, but especially for the generation who was born after 9/11.  For this year’s graduating seniors in 2020, 9/11 is history and not a memory.
