Book Review—Such a Fun Age by Kiley Reid

Such a Fun Age is Kiley Reid’s debut novel.  Currently, it is #4 on the New York Times Best Sellers list.  It was recommended to me through #spiveys📚club, the online book club where I get most of my book recommendations.  It is Spivey’s pick for the month of January.  In addition, it is also Reese Witherspoon’s January pick for her book club, too!

Such a Fun Age explores the issues of race and privilege.  Emira, a single 25-year-old African American woman works for Alix, a successful married white woman.  Emira babysits Briar, Alix’s daughter, while she tries to figure out her career path.  One night there is a disturbance at Alix’s home, and she calls Emira quite late to pick up Briar.  Emira obliges and takes Briar to an upscale neighborhood market for treats.  It is there that a security guard accuses Emira of kidnapping Briar.  This event is the action that begins the unfolding of the rest of the novel.

This novel is full of surprises, that I as the reader, did not see coming.  The characters of Emira and Alix each share their points of view throughout the book.  The book makes the reader think.  All I can say is read Such a Fun Age.  The hype on this book is the real thing.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5
