Book Review—My Name is Lucy Barton by Elizabeth Strout

Elizabeth Strout is a masterful storyteller. Her book My Name is Lucy Barton (Amgash #1), published in January, 2016, is no exception.  Lucy Barton is recovering from surgery in the hospital, and one of the things she looks forward to every day is gazing out the window at the Chrysler Building.  Since Lucy, a writer, has been the hospital a while, she has been reading, but also missing her husband and two daughters.

To Lucy’s amazement, she wakes up one morning to find her estranged mother sitting at the foot of her bed.  Her mother had traveled from Amgash, Illinois all the way to New York to see her.  She and her mother reconnect as they start to reminisce about Lucy’s childhood.  It is not always a pretty picture at all, and there are hints from the author of child abuse.

I didn’t know what to expect from the book.  Once Lucy’s mom visited her, the book focused on the relationship between the mother and daughter.  Lucy is a strong character, is self-aware, in spite of her past.  At times this is a difficult book to read, but Lucy’s strength makes it worthwhile.

Elizabeth Strout’s book, Anything is Possible (Amgash #2), published in April of 2017, is a book of short stories.  One of the stories features the character, Lucy Barton.  I definitely want to read that book soon!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5
