Book Review—The Wedding Date Series (Books 1-4) by Jasmine Guillory

Over the past two months, I have listened to four of the five books in The Wedding Date Series by Jasmine Guillory.  They were all readily available on the Libby app from the Orange County Library System in Orlando, Florida.  I wanted to review them all today, and then review Ms. Guillory’s latest book, Party of Two separately, when it becomes available at the library.

The original book, The Wedding Date, was published in January, 2018.  It is a contemporary romance novel, as you can probably gather from the title.  It is my favorite book so far in the series.  Main characters Alexa Monroe and Drew Nichols “cute meet” in an elevator.  The elevator breaks down, and Drew mentions he is in town for an ex-girlfriend’s wedding.  He doesn’t have a date to the wedding, so he asks Alexa if she would go with him and play the part of his girlfriend.  Alexa goes along with his scheme.  They only plan to see each other for the wedding, but they end up having so much fun, that they want to see each other again.  The only problem is that Drew, a pediatric surgeon, lives in LA and Alexa is the Chief of Staff for the Mayor of Berkeley, California.  You will have to read the book to see what happens.  Just a side note, my Alexa kept hearing the name “Alexa” being read out loud.  I would hear my Alexa say, “Could you repeat that?” and  “I didn’t get that.”  Hilarious!!

The next romance book in the series is The Proposal, published in October, 2018.  Carlos Ibarra, a friend of Drew’s from The Wedding Date, attends a LA Dodgers game with his sister.  Nikole Paterson is also in the stands.  All of a sudden Nikole is on the Jumbotron and is proposed to by her boyfriend of two months.  Nikole is taken aback and says “no” to the proposal.  She then starts to flee the stadium when the crowd at the game turns on her.  Carlos and his sister jump up to help Nikole get out of the stadium.  This starts a fun-filled relationship between two people who say they don’t want a relationship.

The third book in the series is The Wedding Party.  It was published in July, 2019.  This book focuses on Maddie and Theo, who are the best friends of Alexa from The Wedding Date.  They really don’t care for each other (Maddie is Alexa’s best girlfriend and Theo is Alexa’s assistant), but somehow they manage to kiss one night.  Neither one of them want to admit the sparks that flew between them.  This is a cute rom-com!  My Alexa went crazy again while I listened to this book!

Royal Holiday is the fourth book in The Wedding Date Series, and was published in October, 2019.  This was my second favorite book in the series thus far.  Maddie, from The Wedding Party, gets a once-in-a-lifetime chance to style a member of the royal family in England for all of the holiday events.  Maddie brings her mother, Vivian Forest, to England with her so they can spend the holidays together.  Vivian meets Malcolm Hudson, who has worked for the Queen for years, and offers to take Vivian on a private tour of the grounds.  Malcolm starts to make excuses to see Vivian during her stay.  What happens under the mistletoe?  You will have to read the book!  I enjoyed this book because the characters had established and successful careers on their own, but still desired love in their lives.

One reason I have enjoyed Jasmine Guillory’s contemporary romances so much is the diversity in the characters.  Many different cultures are explored within the relationships that are created.  I look forward to reading Party of Two, the fifth book in the series, very soon.  It focuses on Olivia, Alexa’s older sister.  I guess my Alexa will have some things to say about that!
