Book Review—The Midnight Library by Matt Haig

“Go confidently in the direction of your dreams! Live the life you’ve imagined.”—Thoreau

That quote from Thoreau is central to The Midnight Library by Matt Haig and one of the reasons I loved this book. Published by Viking in September of 2020, The Midnight Library was GMA’s October Book of the Month, Once Upon a Book Club’s October pick, and was just voted the Goodreads Best Fiction Book of the Year.

The Midnight Library is a Fantasy Fiction/Time Travel book. What appealed to me as a reader was the fact that the main setting is a library. This is a difficult book to review because I don’t want to give too much away. The element of surprise is one of the best parts of the book. Nora Seed, the main character, travels through many adventures regarding her past. The reader will reflect on their own life as they read the book. The Midnight Library contains lovely quotes by Matt Haig about life, want, and regrets. One of my favorites is:

“The only way to learn is to live.”

This book is a great one to read during the holiday season, especially with the pandemic, because it touches on all of the beautiful possibilities life has in store for each of us. I highly recommend that you read The Midnight Library by Matt Haig.
