Book Review—The Light Pirate by Lily Brooks-Dalton

The Light Pirate by Lily Brooks-Dalton was published in December of 2022. It was a Good Morning America Book Club pick, as well as a Book of the Month selection. It is apocalyptic fiction with a bit of magical realism sprinkled here and there in the novel.

The novel is set in Florida and traces its collapse following series of hurricanes, rising waters and eventually, a nonexistent power grid. Kirby Lowe, works as an electrical lineman, doing everything possible to keep his town equipped with electricity. However, it is Kirby’s daughter, Wanda, born with special gifts, that becomes the real light of the novel. The Light Pirate is beautifully written, and the descriptions of the changing landscape of Florida are heartfelt as the  State becomes unrecognizable and returns to its wilderness roots.

This novel made a huge impression on me since I live in Florida. It would be hard to face a future as bleak as the one described in the novel. However, people became resourceful and helped one another in the novel, which was definitely encouraging.
