Horse by Geraldine Brooks is one of the best books I have read this year. Brooks weaves three narratives in this novel to bring forth this masterpiece.
-The first narrative concerns Jarrett, an enslaved groom/trainer in the 1850’s, who deeply loves Lexington, the horse, and Thomas Scott, a well-known horse painter.
-The second narrative follows a 1950’s New York antique arts dealer who is fascinated with a painting of a horse.
-The present-day narrative involves an art history student who finds a painting of a horse and a curator at the Smithsonian who specializes in bones.
These three narratives bring forth the story of Lexington, the most famous racehorse of his time. The book is so well-written and researched by Brooks. It encompasses the plight of the black groomsmen in the 1850’s as well as the horse racing during that time. It is a fascinating book that will stay with you. When you are finished with the book, look up Lexington and his horse racing legacy. He was an amazing race horse. Below is the only known photograph of Lexington with an unknown groomsmen.
5/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
